The Healthy Nerd

Today on my Facebook wall I saw this shared photo:

The first thing I thought was, are you f***ing kidding me? Can this be true? So, using some logical keywords in google I tried to find out. And soon I found this:

Really?? Using someones elses photo in a completely different [...]

Holy crap.

The tropical storm ‘Agatha’  caused a 60 meter deep sinkhole in Guatamala, swallowing a three story building and a house. (Click on the picture for the source and more high resolution pictures)

They should’ve called this storm Samuel Sullivan..

For those who don’t get it, [...]

Lucky coincidence?

Today it’s WWF’s ‘earth hour’ day, an initiative that requires you to turn of the lights for an hour at 8.30 pm to make your stand against climate change and our contribution to it.

Coincidental, it is also the national day of sleep in the Netherlands. So I’d say, let’s combine the two! Sounds like a solid plan to me.. At 8.30 pm, every person in the Netherlands should turn off all the lights, the television, computers etc and take an one hour nap. If everyone cooperates, and we can also turn off the streetlighting, landmarks, businesses-lights and that sort of things, it’s gonna be one hell of a nap. Complete darkness is one of the necessities to be well rested after your nap. Plus, naps are good to reduce stress, clear your head and to improve your productivity and mood.

Does anyone else see the Win-Win situation here?

Last friday the 6th edition of 3fm Serious Request started again!

The girl who silenced the world for 5 minutes

This clip is already over a year old, but it seems appropriate to share it now with the Copenhagen Conference coming up.. If a young girl can say this, if she can get the world to shut up for 5 minutes, then who are we not to listen and act. [...]

Planet Earth

Planet earth, my home, my place A capricious anomaly in the sea of space Planet earth, are you just Floating by, a cloud of dust A minor globe, about to bust A piece of metal, bound to rust A speck of matter in a mindless void A lonely spaceship, a large asteroid   In [...]

The curse of the environmentalist

I want to share this quote of my friend Djan here because it is unfortunately oh so true.

The worst of being an environmentalist, is not to be unemployed…it is to be powerless and considered annoying, radical etc…people simply don´t want to feel responsible of nothing.

For me, the worst part is to [...]

Leopard’s Leap

If I have to go commercial, I’d rather do it the right way. Today, I bought a bottle of red wine called Leopard’s Leap “Lookout”.  A South African wine from the Western Cape, the province where I spent most of my time, during my stays in South Africa. Simply being drawn to the name of [...]

Some of you out there know that I take care of primates for a living. I work at Stichting AAP, a sanctuary for exotic animals specialised in hosting apes and monkeys. I enjoy my work every single day, but last week I had quite an extraodinary one. For the past few weeks, it has [...]

It all comes back to you

“All things share the same breath — the beast, the tree, the man … the air shares its spirit with all the life it supports. Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound [...]

Animal Nation

If you were to arrive on another planet and discover two species that were less than 1% different, you’d probably assume they could do many of the same things. Yet on this planet, we humans believe we are much smarter than our ape relatives… but in truth we’ve only 0.6% difference in our DNA.
